The Winchester High softball team has made some progress this spring, though it suffered a setback on Monday, May 21, losing 6-3 to Stoneham at Ginn Field.
The Sachems trailed, 3-0 after four innings before scoring two in the fifth and one in the sixth to tie the score.
Sophia Micale and Ashley Hallowell led off with base hits. After they each advanced on a wild pitch, Micale scored when Gianna Gately grounded to first. Mia Legere grounded back to the pitcher, scoring Hallowell.
Tia Fiorentino hit a triple to left field with one out in the sixth. She scored the tying run when Micale flied out to center.
Stoneham regained the lead in the top of the seventh. Julia Lally knocked in Vanessa Bryan with an infield hit to make it 4-3. Lea Sacco drove in Lally with a base hit and Felicia Burgos knocked in Caroline Porter with a sacrifice bunt.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Sachems had the bases loaded with two outs. Legere walked. Olivia Masucci reached on a fielder’s choice and Jillian Tucci walked. The Spartans ended the game when Fiorentino hit into a fielder’s choice.
“We’ve improved this year,” said Winchester coach Steve Swymer. “Today, we couldn’t get the hits when we needed them and didn’t make plays in the field..”
Winchester pitchers Masucci and Tucci, both freshmen, combined to strike out 11 batters. Tucci, who relieved Masucci with no outs and two on in the third, struck out eight.
Winchester dropped to 4-12. Last year, the Sachems won one game.
“We have two very good freshman pitchers, the best pitching we’ve had in four years,” Swymer said.
