WestwoodWinds Community Band invites all Westwood-area musicians to participate in its 10th concert season. Rehearsals are scheduled on seven consecutive Mondays from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Westwood High School Band Room starting June 10.
The band performs variety of musical styles including, light classics, patriotic, pop, TV and movie themes, Broadway and jazz. This year’s concert will feature one piece from each of its previous concert seasons as well as a world premier of a piece composed especially for the band’s 10th anniversary concert.
WestwoodWinds will perform a public concert Monday, Aug. 5, at 6:30 p.m. in the WHS Cafeteria Court Yard. Additional concerts will be held at Fox Hill Village on Aug. 6, and on Westwood Day Sept. 21.
James Giurleo, former Westwood Public Schools K-12 director of Performing Arts, first organized WestwoodWinds the summer of 2010. Under his direction, musicians ranging in age between 14 and 80 with skill levels spanning amateur through professional, performed rousing concerts each year since.
“I look forward to greeting returning band members and to meeting new ones” said Giurleo. “More than 120 band members joined the band over the past nine years and some have faithfully returned every year. Many members are my former students and it is wonderful to see how music still plays such a powerful role in their lives. WestwoodWinds is a great way to bring back the joy of making music with neighbors and friends. Anyone who successfully participated in their high school band will feel comfortable with the musical challenges of WestwoodWinds.”
